Let's play a game! Round three

This week you get a French idiom!

The phrase is:
Ils nous prennent pour les américains!
Directly translated this is:
They think we are Americans!

What does it mean?

hmm

what you've done/said is so outrageous and not French that you are now an American.

We will take these shoppers for all they're worth because they appear to be Americans.

It means "I am a mushroom!". Oh, wait, that's what one of the few other French phrases I know means :-)

I think Katarina is close..."just how gullible do they think we are?"

"They think we're stupid!" (or gullible)

"They think we talk loud and eat a lot?"

Pretty close!

The way I heard it used (it may mean many things, who knows?) it meant "Their services were dramatically overpriced."
